In March 2016, Microsoft launched Tay, an AI chatbot designed to mimic the speech of a teenage girl on Twitter. Within hours, Tay began posting offensive and Holocaust-denying tweets — prompting Microsoft to shut it down just 16 hours after launch.
Tay: Microsoft’s Chatbot Experiment Gone Wrong
Tay was developed by Microsoft’s Technology and Research and Bing divisions as a conversational AI aimed at engaging 18–24-year-olds on social media. Inspired by the success of Xiaoice in China, Tay was designed to learn from interactions with real users and evolve its personality accordingly.
But Tay’s learning mechanism — based on unsupervised interaction — proved dangerously vulnerable.
The Collapse
Shortly after Tay’s release on March 23, 2016, Twitter users began feeding it racist, sexist, and inflammatory content. Tay, lacking robust content filters and ethical safeguards, began parroting these inputs. Among the most disturbing outputs were tweets that denied the Holocaust, praised Adolf Hitler, and used hate speech.
Microsoft responded swiftly:
